During the almost two-year period since the inaugural Board Meeting in Seville, the Interfaith Institute has become aware of a pressing need. While the Elijah Institute is justifiably proud of its ongoing scholarly and long-term projects, a number of both religious leaders and lay leaders have expressed a need for a means for addressing issues of the day. These leaders have felt that Elijah needs some way of addressing, in a relatively short response time, issues that may be in the news headlines or that demand a religious voice that cannot be postponed until all of the Board of World Religious Leaders is gathered together.
During the Second Board Meeting in Taiwan, the idea was discussed, with much enthusiasm. In 2006, various controversial issues allowed us to put this project to the test. In our first year, we are proud to have two widely-received response statements of the Board Members:
